Welcome to 6th Grade at North Star Academy! We are so excited to have you this year. In 6th grade you will have the opportunity to become the best you can in many areas.

Please use the links located at the bottom of this page to find more specific details about 6th grade. The learning management system your student will be using is Google Classroom. At anytime you may ask your student to log on to find specific lessons, learning activities, and projects in all subject areas.

In math we use two programs: Ready Classroom Mathematics and Saxon Math Course 2.

In language arts we will be writing many different styles: poetry, informational research projects, argumentative essays and creative stories. Students will dive into a wide range of reading passages and novels that are entertaining, engaging, and high interest. The novels are Loser, Maniac Magee, Breaking Through, Among The Hidden, Robin Hood, Westing Game, The Odyssey-abridged, Walk Two Moons, Surviving The Applewhites, and The Christmas Carol. We consistently use digital resources from Scholastic Reading, RAZ Plus, and IREADY. We will implement the Core Knowledge Language Arts program as a foundation for daily reading. The unit titles are: Flying Lessons and Other Stories, Calling All Minds, The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Other Greek Stories, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Ninety Miles to Havana, Blessings of Liberty, and Realms of Gold.

As scientists, we will study the Sun-Earth-Moon system, the Solar System, Matter, Energy and Transfer of Energy, Weather and Climate, and Ecosystems. In our Core Knowledge curriculum we will study Light and Matter, Plate Tectonics and Rock Cycling, Natural Hazards, and Cells and Systems. We will attend Space Camp where you will be part of a space mission and also come prepared to get hands-on with tons of experiments.

Social Studies will cover Geography and World Deserts and then we will travel back in time to study ancient civilizations. We will start with Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Indus Valley, and China. Then we explore the Greek and Roman contributions to the modern world. The Middle Ages, Enlightenment, Industrialization, Immigration, and Modern World Events will also be covered.

We are confident that as sixth graders you will quickly learn the rules and procedures that will help us have a successful year. We are counting on you to set an example for the younger grades! We are looking forward to a great year with great friendships!

In an effort to support this goal, 6th graders will apply their talents and interests to their daily learning and products. Through classroom activities that are engaging, students will rise to the challenges and realize their most amazing capabilities. Celebrations for these exciting achievements will occur throughout the year.
